Japanese / American the difference.

We receive many, many Emails asking the question “what is the difference between an Akita and a Japanese Akita Inu?”

Unfortunately this confusion is being perpetuated by the fact that when you search for a Japanese Akita Inu you will undoubtedly get several results that show dogs resembling the first picture below. Dog reference sites are also not helping because they are saying that the Akita is “also known as an Akita Inu”  this is not the case, they are two completely seperate breeds with a different appearance.

In simple terms an Akita has a large, bear-like head usualy with a black mask and is more substantial in overall appearance than an Inu.

As can be seen here with Champion Japanese Akita Inu Umon Go Yonaiyamasow for Tycon the head is far more Fox-like and the dog is more athletic in appearance.

This is, of course, a very simplified comparison of both breeds which is designed to give an indicator of the difference between these two breed, designed to help the complete novice. for full details please read the respective breed standards in the information pages.
